The Friends were established in 2006 by a group of people who were passionate about the cemetery's natural and built environment
- a group now 200 strong.
‘To promote for the public benefit, the conservation of the flora, fauna, monuments, buildings and burial records of the Margravine Hammersmith Cemetery London and the introduction of improvements to the cemetery and its management so long as they are compatible with the conservation of nature’.
Our Victorian cemetery dates back to 1869. It is an oasis of green in the busy city. Many of the gravestones were buried or removed in the 1950s, leaving attractive areas of grassland and woodland. With many wild flowers, and four hundred trees, it is home to many different species, including, insects, bats, squirrels and foxes. We are proud to have promoted its biodiversity. There are many historical documents about burials in the cemetery. There are 6 listed monuments.
The Friends of the cemetery (200 strong) have played a central role in tree planting, and promoting and surveying the biodiversity of the cemetery and have won awards for this. We have also researched our buildings and memorials and are currently working in partnership with LB Hammersmith & Fulham over vital restoration work on 3 of the Listed monuments.
From time to time we publish a nature i-spy for seasonal things for children to watch out for in Kids club
We have also had several Duke of Edinburgh Award participants taking part in gardening
