James Champion 1834-1904 awarded the VC for extreme gallantry as a Troop sergeant Major, 8th (The King's Royal Irish) Regiment (Light) Dragoons (Hussars) in 1858 in India. He fought also in the Crimean War.
In 2016 a stone was erected in his memory as the original was no longer in existence. it is easily visible, set apart on the right as you walk up the main drive from the hospital end.
Members of the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars together with descendants of James attended the blessing in 2016.

He fought in the Crimean War in 1855, a 34 year old Colour Sergeant in the Corps of Royal Engineers. He died in 1892.
His (replacement) headstone is in the eastern wooded area of the cemetery.
