Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers are the butterflies you are most likely to see in the cemetery in the summer. See below.

April-May is very good for Holly Blue butterflies in the cemetery near bushes and trees.
Common Blues emerge a little later, followed by a second brood of Holly Blues July-August.
Speckled Woods can be seen on sunny days from March onwards - usually at the periphery of the cemetery and under trees. They have several broods and are common sightings.
Meadow Browns appear in June-July after the first Speckled Woods, and favour the long grass.
Gatekeepers emerge later - after the Meadow Browns, around July -August. Like Meadow Browns, they also like the long grass.
When the Oxeye daisies are in bloom, watch out for the Marbled White - a butterfly that has become common in recent years.
Our butterflies are recorded on an Ad hoc basis but include the Big City Butterfly Count:
Moths have been the subject of 2 professional surveys. The site is deemed biodiversity rich.
Survey results can be obtained from The Friends of Margravine Cemetery.
